چکیده

◆ THE CAPTURE-RECAPTURE ◆ ESTIMATE THE “capture-recapture method” or “Petersen’s method”, as it is sometimes referred to by fishery biologists, is a simple method of estimating the size of an animal or human population. A number of applications to the estimation of animal population size are given in Seber (1982). Lock and Moore in Gordon and Gordon (1992) note that the capturerecapture method is “at the heart of proposals to adjust for undercount in the U.S. Census” (c.f. the November 1994 issue of Statistical Science). McKeganey (1993) describes its application to estimating the number of prostitutes in Glasgow in an attempt to monitor the spread of HIV. A description of the method now follows. For concreteness, suppose we are interested in estimating the number of fish, N, in a pond. We begin by capturing a sample of size c of the fish, tagging them, and then returning them to the pond. After allowing some time for mixing, a second recaptured sample of size r is taken from all the fish in the pond and the number t of them which are tagged is recorded. An estimate of the number of fish in the pond is

Assessment of Adoption of Improved Fish Pond Management Technologies Among Fish Growers in Benue State, Nigeria

The study assessed adoption of improved fish pond management technologies among fish growers in Benue State, Nigeria. Stratified, purposive and simple random sampling techniques were used in selecting 221 respondents. Primary data were collected using structured questionnaire. Data collected were analysed using both descriptive such as frequency distribution tables and inferential statistics su...

Study of geometric shape and water circulation pattern in fish tanks using computational fluid dynamics

Providing comfort conditions for fish from the point of view of velocity uniformity and flow regime is one of the most important requirements of aquaculture improving the production conditions. In this research, for this purpose, by using computational fluid dynamics, Fluent software and k-ɛ turbulence model, the geometrical shape and pattern of water circulation in a fish breeding pond have be...

How to Maximally Support Local and Regional Biodiversity in Applied Conservation? Insights from Pond Management

Biodiversity and nature values in anthropogenic landscapes often depend on land use practices and management. Evaluations of the association between management and biodiversity remain, however, comparatively scarce, especially in aquatic systems. Furthermore, studies also tend to focus on a limited set of organism groups at the local scale, whereas a multi-group approach at the landscape scale ...

The ability of marine Bacillus spp. isolated from fish gastrointestinal tract and culture pond sediment to inhibit growth of aquatic pathogenic bacteria

In this research, antagonistic activity of two Bacillus species isolated from digestive tract of marine fish and culture pond of sea cucumber was studied. The inhibitory activity of Bacillus spp. isolates against some common pathogenic bacteria of fish was assessed using the agar diffusion method. The strain of B. subtilis G024 exhibited antimicrobial activity against Vibrio anguillarum, V. har...
